Driving is the most popular way to get to Tofino and the trip across Vancouver Island is truly magnificent. You’ll need to take Highway 19 from either Nanaimo or Victoria from the BC Ferries terminals and then switch over to the curvy Highway 4. Plan for a long trip (about three hours from Nanaimo) on a two-lane road, which can be quite slow going, most notably in the summertime. The motel is very easy to find on the main drag when you roll into Tofino and boasts free on-site parking.
For those who want to take to the air the nearest airport is Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ) which is just a 15-minute drive from the village. From Vancouver, airlines like Pacific Coastal Airlines do operate regular although limited service. To get into town from the airport, you will have to take the Tofino Airport Shuttle, or take a cab, alternatively. Another very dramatic and scenic way is to fly directly into Tofino's harbour in a seaplane of companies like Harbour Air and believe me it is an experience in itself.
Another possibility is to get to Tofino without using your car. The Tofino Bus Line offers its service every day and links Tofino with Nanaimo (ferry to Vancouver) and Victoria, among other hubs on Vancouver Island. Once you arrive at the Tofino bus depot, you will find the Schooner Motel only a five to ten minutes walk from there, which is just perfect for any public transport traveler.
